Brian Cain named 2012 WA Power Person of the Year

by Yachting WA on 12 May 2012 The annual Yachting WA awards night was held on Friday 11th May 2012 at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. During the ceremonies, Brian Cain, nominated by Yachting WA Cruising and Power Yacht Committee, was named 2012 Power Person of the Year.

Brian Cain, a dedicated power man, has for many years volunteered his time and efforts to the power yachting community of Western Australia.

Brian commenced Time Trialling in the early 1980’s with his loyal team mate/ wife, Jackie who served as his trusted navigator.

A staunch believer in maintaining continuity, Brian named his three competitive 28’ cruisers Second Wind, Second Wind II and Second Wind III.

Brian held the position of Rear Commodore Power at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club for 1991/1992.

Winning no less than three state championships (1995, 2001 and 2002), Brian put his immense experience and knowledge as Courses Chairman to good use. His Courses group spent four years re-vamping all the courses to ensure compatibility with all the participating clubs and once this was achieved he re-did and extended the range of the State Championship Courses.

During the past few season, Brian has retired from Time Trialling and transferred to the Start Boat. During the sailing season, Brian also volunteers his services as mid-week Sailing Starter and Time Keeper on the RFBYC start boat.

Brian, in modestly accepting the award at the Yachting WA Cruising and Power Yacht Committee Awards evening in September 2011, acknowledged the contribution of his wife of 51 years, Jackie. In a reversal of roles during a Lady Skipper Event, Brian as temporary Navigator, started Skipper Jackie 10 minutes early and instantly lost her a mere 600 points per mark! Good heartedly, he graciously added Biggest Goose Award to his list of credits.

Brian has contributed much to the sport for both his club (RFBYC) and the Yachting WA Cruising and Power Yacht Committee since 1984. Three times State Champion, he has competed at the highest level and continues to work for the sport at both club and inter club level. Brian has through his association with the boating community of Western Australia provided assistance and advice on numerous issues to both Perth and regional boating communities and is a well deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
