P750 (Thundercat) Powerboat National Championships 2012 first round kicks off on Sunday 6th May right in the heart of Limerick City. While the cats have been seen in the city before, this will be the first time a round of the Powerboat National Championships will have taken place here.
The championships takes the role of the centre piece attraction for the Sunday afternoon of the Limerick Riverfest. Members of the P750 class association have been working closely with all of the stakeholders in Limerick to ensure a great afternoon of top-class racing and entertainment for both the crews and spectators.
The course has been specially designed to suit the space available, and to ensure a strong spectacle it is run as a 'circuit course'. This hugely reduces the chances of each race becoming a procession as it means each crew will have to include two 'equaliser laps' during their nine lap race. The equaliser laps involve the addition of an extra racing mark which makes these laps longer, meaning the crews have to work hard on their strategy to decide when's the best time to 'go long'. It makes the racing very unpredictable and that makes things a lot more
