Greek Speed Nationals second round took place in Drepano, Greece over the weeked of 7th and 8th April 2012. More than 35 athletes, including three women, gathered at the beautiful location near Patras and set their sails and boards.
The weather was very promising this time and dark clouds were gathering at the horizon, meaning that a storm with strong winds would arrive soon.
The sailors hit the water to do some warm up runs in order to be ready for the actual run. The speeds were averaging around 30 knots, but this was about to change.
The storm hit the bay of Drepano around noon and the wind speed was more than 40 knots. It was time for the real speed session to begin.
Most of the athletes were surprised from the radical wind increase and could not hold their sails. The most experienced enjoyed the weather and averaged speeds close to 38 knots.
After two tiring days of racing, the second and last part of the speed tour was concluded and the athletes received their prizes.
Next stop, the first part of the slalom tour in May.
