Fendi Racing’s challenge for honours in 2012 has taken yet another twist, with the team confirming that they have purchased the multi-championship winning hull, Fazza 3, from Dubai’s Victory Team.
The move into the Michael Peters-designed, Victory-built hull, sees another change in direction by the Italian outfit. Team owner-driver Luca Formilli Fendi and throttleman Giovanni Carpitella started their 2011 campaign in a leased Victory hull, finishing third in race 1 in Abu Dhabi. The team then opted to run the Outerlimits hull-engine package in Norway, but immediately switched to SCAM power-plants for the remainder of the year.
In Doha this year they dropped in Sterling V8s which they have confirmed will now power their new purchase.
For crew chief and team manager, Marco Bonomo, it is an emotional reunion with a boat he says he knows 'every single scratch, screw and bubble of the lady'.
Bonomo is arguably the most successful crew chief of the last decade and rigged the team’s new acquisition from scratch when she left the mould in the winter of 2006. Running in the famous blue of Victory [77], the first of her 27 race wins and many titles came in 2007, Bonomo’s great friend, the late Jean-Marc Sanchez, winning World and European honours alongside Arif Al Zafeen.
The following year and running the number one plate, Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi lifted the World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position Championships. 2009 saw the boat rebranded Fazza [3], with Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi lifting a trio of titles, claiming World, Middle East and Pole Position glory, successfully defending their World and Middle East titles in 2010 and winning their first European championship together.
The boat will arrive in Europe at the end of this month and will be housed at the team’s facility in Terracina near Roma. Bonomo is not committing to whether or not they plan any modifications at this stage, simply stating 'we will see how we get on.'
