RYA Sail for Gold programme was launched in March 2011. Whether it’s a member of the British Sailing Team, one of our rising stars, or even an Olympic medallist from the past, the programme is helping you to discover and get behind your local sailing heroes.
Using the Sail for Gold website you can now discover who your local sailing stars are, learn all about their successes and history as well as their connections to your area.
'We want as many people as possible to engage with the London 2012 sailing events and what better way to be inspired than learning all about the sailing heroes that live on your doorstep' said Celia Edgington, Coordinator of the RYA’s Sail for Gold Programme.
'There are so many truly inspirational people who have contributed to the success of the sport. We have been busy interviewing well over 100 people including sailors, windsurfers and the members of the Skandia Team GBR support team, so no matter where you live, everyone will be able to locate their own local hero'.
The Sail for Gold initiative aims to bring the excitement of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to sailing clubs and training centres across the country in the lead up to and during the Games by looking at ways to inspire new and existing sailors to get out on the water, make clubs the focal point for members to join in the spirit of the London 2012, and maximise support for the British Sailing Team.
Along with your local sailing heroes you can also find out when the Olympic Torch Relay is coming near you and discover what special events are happening in your region.
