Melbourne's Tall Ship Enterprize has a weekend away in Geelong on the March Labour Day weekend, including sails as part of the bienniel Geelong Festival of Wooden Boats on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th March.
Enterprize is a wooden topsail schooner which is an authentic replica of the boat which brought the first European permanent settlers to Melbourne from Tasmania in 1835. It is one of the featured boats at the Wooden Boats festival.
For people interested in a Tall Ship adventure there is an overnight trip on Port Phillip from Melbourne Docklands to Geelong leaving at 6pm on Friday ninth. You could take the trip down to Geelong overnight, sleep on board, have breakfast, and depart the boat at around 10am. Then spend time at the Wooden Boats Festival and return to Melbourne by private vehicle or train later in the day. There is also a trip on Enterprize back from Geelong to Melbourne at 4pm on Monday 12th. Both the Geelong and Melbourne Docklands piers are close to Railway Stations with regular train services between the two cities.
In Geelong Enterprize will operate from Stony Pier, in front of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, out onto Corio Bay. There are one hour sails across Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11am each day, with an early evening cruise on Sunday. Highlights will include Enterprize's participation in the Grand Parade at 11am on Sunday morning and sails out among boats sailing in the classic wooden and couta boat races on Saturday and sunday. The short sails are suitable for people of all ages.
Go to www.enterprize.org.au to book on line or for further information. Tickets for the short sails may also be purchased from the ship in the half hour before a sail if available. The Enterprize is a traditionally rigged wooden sailing ship. She is based in Melbourne's Docklands and has a busy program of public and charter sails each week excepting for the layup maintenance period late June/July period.
