Docklands Fishing Experience - Australia Day 2012 DPI Victoria .
Over five hundred people from various walks of life were educated about fishing and even gave it a try at the Docklands Fishing Experience (Victoria) on Australia Day.
The successful event was staged in partnership with the Department of Premier and Cabinet as one of several activities designed to attract visitors into the Docklands precinct for Australia Day.
The multicultural mix of participants reflected Melbourne’s cultural diversity including people from India, Japan and Southeast Asia. Visitors from France, Switzerland and England also joined in, wetting a line for bream which live amongst the Docklands’ wharves, floating platforms and pylons.
The Fisheries Victoria marquee provided educational products about angling opportunities in the Docklands precinct while the Futurefish Foundation provided free rods, tackle, bait and tuition. Fishcare Victoria volunteers were also on hand promoting sustainable fishing practices.
Large schools of yellow eye mullet entertained children by swirling around and vigorously taking baits as they were lowered into the water. A few children experienced something they will not forget, hooking large bream, but losing them on barnacle encrusted pylons.
More than 200 children went home with a complimentary rod and memories of a great introductory fishing experience with their family.
