Gant Portsea Cup 2012 - Classic Couta Boats

by Teri Dodds on 8 Jan 2012
Salacia is the most recently launched Couta Boat in the fleet - GANT Portsea Cup 2012 Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
The GANT Portsea Cup, the Premier race of the season for Sorrento's renowned Couta Boat fleet, was supported by forty-nine entrants, from Sorrento and Queenscliff. The day commenced with breakfast in the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club's marquee, with the always entertaining MC Past President of Yachting Australia, Andrew Plympton interviewing notable guests and crew members.

The race course proved to be challenging with a strong ebb tide and a fading breeze, often pushing the heavy Couta Boat's sideways, and frequently into rounding marks. With no sea breeze apparent, the water turned to glass towards the finals stages of the race, with only a few of the boats completing the race.

Peter Gale and his crew sailed a faultless race on Sorrento to win Division 1, with Rhapsody (Greg Chisholm) and Romy (Nigel Abbott) taking the minor placings.

In Division 2, Morning Star (Robert Tucker) took the win with Joan (Roger Gordon) coming in second and Defiance (Tristan Cross) rounding out the top three.
