Sail-World.com is working again with Peter Bye of vk2mpj on the NSW South Coast as we have done in recent years to provide the live feed for the 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart race.

Peter Bye had had an interest in Ham Radio, particularly marine radio since he was a teenager.

He said today ‘Back in 1998 Sydney to Hobart disaster, I was on holidays in inland Australia, at a ham radio mates place when the first lot of mayday calls started coming in. We spent quite hours just sitting by the radio and listening to what was going on.

'I live in South Nowra and my streaming of the Sydney Hobart radio traffic started because I am in a prime position to receive the radio traffic and was keen that everyone could hear it.

‘I am a member of the Wireless Emergency Network – a group of trained amateur radio operators who are accredited to assist in emergency situations and we are equipped to provide emergency and safety communications when normal systems fail or are inadequate.

‘We are a fully accredited emergency organisation. We operate under the volunteer rescue association and we are all volunteers. We give up our own time, our own equipment to do what we have got to do.’

‘For example we stood up during the bushfires in Orange, Newcastle earthquake, the 93 floods, the 94 bushfires and most recently the Victoria bushfires.

‘Right now we are all enjoying the Sydney to Hobart traffic and the Melbourne cricket test.’
