New Zealand is leading an international drive to protect the ocean's over exploited fish stocks.
Trade Minister Tim Groser has led a call for urgent action to protect global fish stocks at the World Trade Oranisation's Ministerial Conference in Geneva.
New Zealand is at the forefront of a group of countries who have pulled together to draw political attention to the destruction of wild fisheries.
In presenting the group's statement today, Groser said an estimated 85 per cent of the world's fish stocks were 'fully exploited, over exploited, depleted or in recovery'.
The group of countries includes Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Norway, Peru and the United States.
