ISAF Sailing World Cup opening round is being held on Melbourne’s Port Phillip. Tasmanian sailor Matt Bugg today won two more races in the 2.4mR class bringing his score to five wins and a second.
The World Cup regatta, at Sandringham Yacht Club, marks the start of Bugg’s concerted international campaign to secure a place in Australia’s sailing team for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.
Earlier this year, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania club member secured Australia a place in the 2.4mR class fleet for the Paralympics, but Yachting Australia has yet to confirm that Bugg is in the team. His campaign this summer includes international regattas in Australia and in the Americas.
After three days of sailing on Port Phillip, Bugg is on five points after discarding his second place, while his nearest rival, New Zealander Brett Wilcox, is on 14 points and Sydney disabled sailor Greg Hyde is on 16 points.
