The Auckland Stopover team for the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race is now recruiting volunteers to work in all areas both on and off the water before, during and after the Stopover.
'We have planned a fantastic Race Village, wonderful facilities for the competing crews and a great entertainment programme for the visiting public,' says Auckland Stopover Port Director Tom Mayo. 'Now we are looking for volunteers to work with us to deliver something really special.'
Volunteers are needed to assist with race operations, logistics, accreditation, media, spectator services, hospitality, the learn to sail programme, the schools’ programme and much much more.
'If you would like to volunteer, please register on our website now,' says Mayo. 'We will soon start advertising the volunteer positions and details will go first to registered volunteers. You could be manning the Volvo Ocean Race simulator, greeting VIPs, teaching kids to sail or working with the media. There are so many opportunities.'

Each Stopover features an In-Port Race, with points counting towards the Volvo Ocean Race overall standings, and a Pro-Am Race.
The Auckland Stopover runs from 8 - 18 March 2012. The last Auckland Stopover was a decade ago, during the 2001/2002 Race. There was a brief 48 hour pitstop in Wellington in 2005/6. The 2012 Stopover will be the eighth time the Race has come to Auckland. This is the eleventh edition of the Race which was first held back in 1973/74.
