K6 Nationals at Falmouth

by RS Association on 24 Sep 2011
SW
The K6 fleet travelled to Cornwall and were hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth for their 2011 Championship. The four day event was to be a mix of windward – leeward courses and a one off ‘Round the harbour’ race - plus of course the evening dinners and entertainment. The first day out in Falmouth Bay gave the fleet of 23 K6s a lively day with a blustery and sometimes wet breeze reaching gusts of 30 knots.

Day one and true to form the first race was a battle of the three favourites with Dave Hitchcock and Ian Nicholson coming out on top followed by Ian Robson, Sandy Johnson and Simon Tonks and Neil Fulcher and Lawrence Crispen.

However the second race turned on its head a few times as the strong wind caused a few dramatic moments. Dave and Ian held onto the lead but were followed into the finish closely by the team of Dave Hall, Gary Fare and Beate Pohlar.

With a gale blowing on the second day and not much sign of it easing racing was cancelled allowing the fleet to become tourists for the day.

With the loss of the two races and the harbour race four races were sailed on day three. The bright and breezy day forecast arrived as promised. The North West wind off the shore gave both the competitors and Race team some challenges but both seem to cope admirably. Dave and Ian took three of the days races with Ian, Simon and Sandy the other. Neil and Lawrence should have taken the third race of the day but mis-counted the number of laps. Dave, Beate and Gary also managed to give away a one minute lead after finding the only patch in the middle of the final downwind leg with light wind. At the end of the day and with only two races scheduled for the final day David and Ian had done enough the be crowned Champions for the second year running.

So the final day was a show down for second to fourth with Ian, Sandy and Simon, Dave, Beate and Gary and Neil and Laurence only one point apart. The final two races were held in the Estuary since there was a full foam up in the bay. It soon turned into a battle of wits as the three boats swapped places and battled it out at the front of the fleet. Ian‘s team won the first race of the day closely followed by Neil and Lawrence. To add to the mix and make life interesting the team of Nick Jones, George Jones and Mike Butler got the best results of the week with two thirds.

Dave’s team finally broke the jinx and put in a strong performance to win the last race. When all was counted there was still only point between each of them. Ian, Sandy and Simon came out on top giving them second place followed by Dave, Beate and Gary in third and Neil and Lawrence in fourth.

All in all a great championship with some spectacular sailing. Many thanks to the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, the Falmouth Sailing Centre and to Navigators Insurance.
