Pioneer Lake - Tasmanian trout fishing to date Carl Hyland - copyright
Tasmania’s trout season opened on the first weekend in August and the reports to date have been nothing short of spectacular.
Many anglers have been waiting for an uptake in the weather and this has finally happened, spring has finally sprung.
Great Lake fishing, in Tasmania’s Central Highlands has kept everyone happy with the lake being at a level that hasn’t been seen for years and being only 10 metres from full; this water looks like it is really yet to fire. Authurs Lake is full to overflowing and this water is also right back up into low lying scrub along foreshores and this makes for excellent fishing, especially if you are a fly angler or soft plastic fisherperson.

Lower level impoundments along the Eastern coast of the state haven’t been forgotten with most anglers taking home fish. Stockings by the inland Fisheries Service have dramatically boosted local fish stocks and waters such as Brushy Lagoon, Blackmans, and Lake Barrington, just to name a couple and other waters such as Pioneer Dam have also received a much needed boost of fish. What this does is enhance the natural recruitment levels of fish in these waters which make for really exciting times for local and visiting anglers alike. Is that fish at the end of my line a record breaker or is it a nice take home for tea beauty?
Rainbow trout are the most common species that seem to be currently caught and these fish love big red flashy lures. In saying that, hot pink lures like RMG poltergeists are very popular and have a great catch record here in Tassie. Again, you never know if your fish is going to be a nice ‘pannie’ or a monster 18lb specimen.
To coincide with the great spring time fishing in the state,we have the annual trout expo coming up on the 24th and 25th September, if you are in the state, the exhibitions and the attractions on site at Brumbies Creek are well worth having a look at.
