CORK/Sail Kingston Set to Host Two Fall Sailing Regattas This Weekend

by Melissa Shorrock on 16 Sep 2011
SW
Tourism Kingston is pleased to announce that CORK/Sail Kingston will host the 2011 CORK Fall Regatta and Great Lakes Championship for Laser and Radial sailing classes on September 17 and 18, 2011. The competition will take place at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour and racing will occur in three competition areas on Lake Ontario.

The Olympic Laser and Radial classes will compete for the Great Lakes Championship and valuable ranking points for the North American Grand Prix Series. Canadian National Team Members, Claire Merry and Robert Davis, are looking to secure a top spot in the 2011 rankings with a win this weekend. Claire Merry and other athletes will also participate in the annual Terry Fox Run Sunday morning at St. Lawrence College before competing in the sailing competition later that day.

Also part of the race weekend will be the Ontario Championship series. Sailors in the Optimist, 420, 29er, Laser and Radial classes will be competing for the Ontario Championship. The CORK Fall Regatta is the last event of the year for the Ontario Championship Series. Sailors in the Olympic 49er class will compete on the race area just off Richardson Beach.

For spectators, race areas are best viewed from the waterfront (west of Richardson Beach) or from the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Spectators are also welcome to visit Portsmouth Olympic Harbour and watch the athletes prepare their boats for each race. Admission is free.
