Steinlager 2, winner and new record holder of the Huelva (Spain) to La Gomera (Canary Islands) race August 2011 SW
Steinlager 2, the big red Whitbread maxi-ketch of late Sir Peter Blake is still sailing strong, and still winning races.
In the 750 nm Atlantic regatta from Huelva (Spain) to La Gomera (Canary Islands) she was always in the lead of the fleet of 16 yachts.
In its 27th edition, the regatta Huelva-La Gomera is a well-known Spanish Classic, dominated by VOR 60 'Tokio' in previous years.
But this year, the Farr-designed 'Big Red' did even better and established a new race record with 75 hrs 21 min. (Tokio's best result in 2008 was 81 hrs 02 min.)
After adding another success to its long list of victories, Steinlager 2 will be heading to Alicante to participate in the Legends Regattas for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.
Steinlager 2 won the 1898/90 then Whitbread Round the World Race, winning all six legs of the 32,926nm course. A fleet of 24 boats contested two divisions in the race.
Volvo Ocean Race Ambassador Lady Pippa Blake will be delighted to meet friends and yachts, but especially Steinlager 2.
