Port Coogee Marina satisfies some of WA's appetite for berths

by Media Services on 29 Aug 2011 Perth’s demand for boat pens is proving to be insatiable gauging by the overwhelming response to a public call for expressions of interest on the release of the first 60 boat pens for Australand’s Port Coogee Marina, near Fremantle.

Australand’s WA General Manager Tony Perrin said the EOI process, which ended on June 17, attracted over 80 applicants.

He said Australand was now considering its options for expanding stage one of the development to accommodate more boat pens.

'We had strong interest in the 12m and 15m pens, particularly the 15m pens, so Australand is currently considering the case to construct additional 15m pens as part of stage one,' Perrin said.

Construction of the marina is due to begin in August and will be undertaken by Walcon which specialises in using the latest construction techniques to build floating pens.

When all stages are completed, the marina is expected to accommodate 300 vessels of up to 20m in length. The first boats are due to take up residence by January 2012.

Australand will make offers to EOI applicants in accordance with the EOI terms and in regards to the available mooring sizes which may take several rounds of offers to conclude.

'We had applications from as far away as Darlington and Mandurah. This just demonstrates the marina will provide a valuable service for the broader community,' Perrin said.

'The main reasons people cited on their applications for wanting a pen at Port Coogee were the calm sailing waters of Cockburn, easy access to Rottnest Island and surrounding islands and great fishing spots,' he added.

'They also said they wanted to upgrade from fixed pens to floating pens which provides easier access on and off the boat and less likelihood of damages.

'Parties who were land purchasers within the estate or lived nearby, said they wanted to live near their boat and would enjoy being close to existing and future amenities.'

Located just minutes from Fremantle and 23 kilometres south of the Perth CBD, the $2 billion development is one of Australia’s biggest coastal renewal projects covering more than 85 hectares.

The blueprint for the exciting Port Coogee marina and residential estate was based on the world's best waterfront neighbourhoods, aiming to create a vibrant community based around its residents and visitors living, working and playing within the one place.

Port Coogee will offer a variety of living options including traditional home-sites, luxury apartments, townhouses, waterfront and island lots. The 300-pen marina, shops, restaurants, a boutique hotel, boardwalks and a spectacular waterside amphitheatre will all add to the cosmopolitan atmosphere.
