Cruising sailors who became hostages - Rachel and Paul Chandler SW
The UK's Daily Mail is proud of their 'World Exclusive', a synopsis extract of the book that we always knew was coming. It's the book that has just been published by Paul and Rachel Chandler who became world figures when they were kidnapped by Somali Pirates and held for over a year until a ransom was paid for their release.
The Chandlers had spent years working for their dream: to sail around the world in their 38ft yacht Lynn Rival, leaving the rat race trailing in its wake. And when they retired – Paul was a civil engineer, Rachel a government economist – they embarked on the journey of a lifetime.
By October 2009, they had left their home in Kent far behind, visiting the Aegean, the Red Sea, the coast of India and the Maldives, recording their voyage in meticulous diaries.
Now their aim was to sail from the Seychelles to Tanzania, arriving there for Christmas. The forecast was good as they departed, but 12 hours out the sky clouded over and the wind dropped. The Chandlers settled down for a long, difficult haul – unaware that life was about to change for ever . . .
