70th Tre Golfi Regatta smashes records: Galateia claims line honours and the Gustavo d'Andrea Trophy

Galateia, the Wallycento owned by David Leuschen and Chris Flowers, was the first yacht to cross the finish line of the 70th Tre Golfi Regatta.
With an extraordinary time of 13 hours, 19 minutes and 42 seconds, Galateia shattered the previous record of 15 hours, 30 minutes and 1 second set by Jethou (Sir Peter Ogden) in 2023.
The boat completed the approximately 150-mile course at 5:54 AM this morning, Saturday 17 May, leading the entire Maxi, ORC and Multihull fleet after a thrilling night of lead changes with Magic Carpet (Sir Lindsay Owen Jones), which crossed the line in second.
In third place in real time was Bella Mente, the Maxi 72 owned by Hap Fauth, followed by another Maxi 72, Jolt by Peter Harrison, and then Bullitt, the Wally 93 of Andrea Recordati. Several Maxi yachts remain at sea, so the final corrected-time results are pending, including ORC and ORC Multihull classes, with all boats expected to arrive throughout the day.
"A stunning success for the 70th edition of the Tre Golfi Regatta, with weather conditions that allowed for a new course record," said Roberto Mottola di Amato, President of CRV Italia, after awarding the traditional Gustavo D'Andrea Trophy at the finish line. "Galateia crossed the line at dawn, and everyone who has already arrived is calling it a thrilling race with steady breeze, short waves and the classic variety between the islands. We're truly pleased that all arrivals so far have praised this latest edition. Year after year, our regatta grows steadily - fueled by the enthusiasm of those who return for the beauty and challenge of the course".
The race began on Friday 16 May at 4:15 PM from the Bay of Santa Lucia under north-easterly Grecale winds of 14-18 knots, gusting over 20. The fleet raced along the stunning route through the Gulfs of Naples, Gaeta and Salerno, rounding the iconic islands of Ischia, Ponza, Capri and Li Galli. This edition proved to be one of the fastest and most exciting in recent memory but not without its share of setbacks: Capricorno (Alessandro Del Bono), with Brazilian legend Torben Grael on tactics, retired with a broken headsail; Anywave-Safilens (Alberto Leghissa) suffered mast base issues; and Walliño, owned by IMA President Benoît de Froidmont, struck a rock near Ponza. Fortunately, no crew members were injured.
The Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2025 is organized by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia in collaboration with the Yacht Club Italiano, Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia, IMA, ORC, FIV and UVAI, with the support of Rolex Timepiece, Loro Piana, North Sails, Wally Yachts, Banca Patrimoni Sella & C., Ferrarelle, Ottogas, Deloitte, Italia Yachts, Le Axidie, Caffè Borbone, Schenker, Miliare and Consorzio Prosecco DOC.
