Contender Worlds 2011 Days 1 and 2 - Johnsen leads

Contender World Championships are being sailed at Weymouth, UK from 18th to 22nd July, with two races scheduled for each day.

Day 1 started with 30 knots on the harbour wall so all racing was postponed until 1pm. The 144 sailors headed out to the bay for the first of the two races.


The wind moderated and was patchy with variable strength.

Top performances of the day had John Browett and Neil Ferguson winning the first round followed by Ben Holden and Soren Andreasen in second and Graham Scott and Andrea Bonezzi in third.

The second round of racing saw Christoph Homeier and Scott lead the way. Stuart Jones and Jesper Nielsen followed in second and Tim Holden and Bjarke Johnsen were third.

At the end of day one, Wavelength sailmaker Graham Scott led the fleet.

Day 2 saw the sailors hit the water at 9.30am for a seven hour onwater day. The wind was fickle but the day's full schedule was completed successfully.

Bjarke Johnsen and Ben McGrane each won both of the two races of the day.

In the first race second place went to Stuart Jones and David Bate and in third were Stacey Bray and Markus Maisenbacher. In the second race of the day, Christoph Homeier and Soren Andreasen were second and Graham Scott and Max Billerbeck finished third.

The new leader at the end of day 2 was Bjarke Johnsen (DEN).

Blinder of day 1 goes to Neil Ferguson on his first Worlds race win!

Blinder of day 2 goes to Richard Buttner who led for the majority of the last heat of the day finishing sixth.
