Luxury yacht leading in sustainability and energy conservation

by Nancy Knudsen on 21 Jun 2011
Ethereal sailing SW
Sailing Yacht Ethereal is a 2009 58 metre (190 feet) luxury yacht designed by Ron Holland and built by Royal Huisman with interior design by Pieter Beeldsnijder, the ultimate in modern sailing luxury - but that is not what is special about her.

What is special is that she is currently afloat with top of the line energy efficiency and sound insulation and organic fabrics. What is more special is that throughout she shows an extraordinary level of technological innovation focused on energy conservation and sustainable, autonomous operation.

What is even more special is that she has the ability to operate for extended periods of time by stored electrical power, Etherealrecently went a step 'greener' too and became CarbonNeutral, reducing its carbon footprint to net zero by using a selection of high quality, guaranteed carbon offsets supplied by The CarbonNeutral Company.

Even the company which charters her - a company called YCO - is doing its bit. YCO takes an eco-friendly stance by recently becoming involved with Sea Keepers, an international organization thathas opened a specialist sail division to cater for the growing green trend in yachting.

Charlie Birkett, Chief Executive Officer of YCO is delighted to have the yacht for charter.

'Adding super yachts like Ethereal to our charter fleet, a yacht meticulously designed to be as ecologically efficient as it is luxe, is where not only YCO is heading, but the world,' he recently told the Washington Times.

Ethereal’s carbon footprint for 2009 was offset through the Tieling coal mine methane project in China, which captures coal mine methane - a potent greenhouse gas - and uses it as an energy source to supply gas to homes and local industry.

Its 2010 footprint was offset through The CarbonNeutral Company’s OneNature portfolio, made up of 100% renewable energy projects - not only solar, wind and hydro, but also biomass and re-use of waste products like biogas.

She's quite nice inside too.

The yacht’s interior designer, Pieter Beeldsnijder, incorporates the tradition of yachting whilst also integrating the modern needs of stylish, yet relaxed, living and a functional approach to light, natural wooden joinery and space. Up to 10 luxury yacht charter guests can be accommodated overnight, in 3 double and 2 twin bedded cabins, while 12 can be aboard for day sailing.

Windows and hatches manufactured from exotic glass laminates designed to become increasingly opaque as infrared heat increases; hybrid electromechanical propulsion system that allows the yacht, under sail, to charge its technically-advanced bank of lithium polymer batteries instead of using generators.

Ethereal is packed with technology, with a total of 21 computers carrying out the Alarm and monitoring system. 18 custom PC based room controllers maintain a room’s environment by operating air-conditioning, lighting, and shades as well as displaying yacht information, charts and cameras.

The origins of luxury yacht Ethereal are in the 43m ketch, S/Y Juliet, which was coveted by the owners and this was the base for the 'dream team' of Ron Holland Design, Pieter Beeldsnijder and the Royal Huisman yacht yard. With S/Y Ethereal, however, the owner wanted to progress his experience and knowledge to create a far larger yacht, and one which is certainly more technologically advanced and developed.

With well considered outside sunning and entertainment areas, a good selection of water toys, and a functional swim platform, ETHEREAL provides all the requisites for a superior luxury charter vacation.
