Azores and Back Yacht Race

by AZAB on 6 Jun 2011
SW
The 10th Azores and Back Yacht Race (AZAB) is being hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Falmouth and started on Saturday 4th June at 1200 UTC.

The heavy downwind conditions, with winds up to 30 knots (far more than predicted) are making the self steering systems of all the boats in the fleet work overtime. Outrageous, the Swan 47 sailed by Mark Stevenson and Freddie Stevenson has been force to retire on self steering problems just hours after Paul Brant on Ninjod had suffered power failure that had left him without autopilot.

Meanwhile, at the front, Jankees Lampe on La Promesse powers on tirelessly and is probably working overtime too thinking about his chance repeating his feat of 2007 when he was the first boat home winning the Henry Lloyd trophy.

Paul Brant on Ninjod was forced to turn the bow towards Falmouth after what he described as 'catastrophic instrument failure.'

* The AZAB covers just less than 2,500 miles of ocean, approximately 1,220 miles on each leg.

Open to single and double handed crews and held over a 45 day period, the yachts usually take seven to ten days to complete each leg allowing a week or so to relax and restock for the return passage.
