Portuguese 420 Championship’s first day of racing was held today, Friday 27 May, just off the coast of Tavira Island.
All in all it was a wonderful day that allowed for three races to be completed under blue skies and a hot sun in four to five knot winds.
The leading sailors are the local team of Luis Niza and Paulo Baptista, from the Nautic Club of Tavira, who successfully completed the regattas.
In second place is the girls' team of Patricia Costa and Inês Lucas, from the Barreiro Sailing Club followed by João Villas-Boas and João Duarte, from the Lisbon Naval Association.
Luis Niza and Paulo Baptista finished third at the 420 Open Iberian Championship in early March 2011, and are very confident about their performance today. Their objective for tomorrow – to maintain their lead. The 32 national teams and 64 sailors are competing not only for podium places but also to qualify for a place on the Portuguese team to compete at the 420 European Championships in July.
