Delta Lloyd Regatta Finn day two lead to Wright

by Robert Deaves on 26 May 2011
Ed Wright (GBR) gets back to winning ways - Delta Lloyd Regatta 2011 Finn Margje Tempelaars
Delta Lloyd Regatta day two for the Finns in Medemblik brought race wins for Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) and Ed Wright (GBR).

Conditions were lighter in complete contrast to day one.

Leg five of the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup opened with postponements for two hours due to the lack of wind. The Finns were again scheduled to start in the afternoon, which meant another late finish. By the time the Finns races were started, the wind was blowing a steady eight knots south-westerly, but with big shifts across the course area.

Vasilij Zbogar (SLO) took the lead in race three to record a nice win from Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) and Dan Slater (NZL). Zbogar, who has two Olympic medals in the Laser class behind him, is competing against long time Finn sailor Gasper Vincec (SLO) for the Slovenian place on the start line in 2012, and the two are often neck and neck in each regatta.

Zbogar ended up with a 1, 6 for the day while Vincec scored a 6, 4 and the pair ended the day with just two points separating them, this time in Zbogar's favour. Meanwhile, Slater, who is relatively unopposed for the New Zealand place, picked up a second black flag in the series in race four. He also picked up a black flag in yesterday's opening race.

Ed Wright (GBR) was back to winning ways in race four to record his second win of the series, this time ahead of Piotr Kula (POL) and Brendan Casey (AUS). A mix up in the results on day one left some sailors unscored after Tuesday’s opening races, including Casey, so he opened day two in third place overall, but a 34th in race three has left him in ninth overall, though when the drop comes into effect on Thursday, he should be able to discard that.

Kula is challenging the 2008 Olympian Rafal Szukiel (POL) for the Polish place in 2012. Kula scored 35, 2 today to sit in 10th overall, while a more consistent Szukiel placed 7, 7 to end the day in eighth. Yesterday's surprise Greg Douglas (CAN) had another great day with a 12, 6 to stay in fifth place overall. Elsewhere in the fleet there are many other two boat as well as three or four boat battles going on, as many sailors have started their Olympic selection series for 2012.

The forecast for Thursday is 15-20 knots in the morning gusting to more than 25 knots in the afternoon. Fleet racing continues to Saturday with the medal race for the top 10 boats on Sunday 29 May.
