The coast of Kangaroo Island is as perilous as it is spectacular. SW
In the wake of the drowning deaths of two men off the coast of Kangaroo Island in SA over the weekend, authorities have suggested a campaign educating tourists and immigrants about the dangers of the sea.
The two Indian men, aged 25 and 29, were swept off rocks at Vivonne Bay on Kangaroo Island on Sunday. They were posing for photos when the wave struck them and dragged them out to sea.
Kangaroo Island Mayor, Jayne Bates said it would be best to educate tourists about coastal safety before they arrived on the island. She said it would be impossible to signpost warnings on every beach or rock face.
Surf Lifesaving SA state operations manager Shane Daw said about 20 per cent of drownings or near-drownings in SA involved internationals visitors, 'which is a disproportionate number of people'. He said it often stemmed from ignorance and inexperience.
