Will these guys be good Sports in 2004? Katrina Butler
The following item is an unashamed attempt to promote the new Tornado Sport
provided by Mitch Booth, the class president. It does not necessarily reflect ISAF
Policy.
Over the last week the Tornado Sport has been going through a rigorous test program in
preparation for next month's Olympic class selection. The Tornado Sport fundamentally just
adds a second trapeze and spinnaker to the existing Olympic tornado . There are a number of
small refinements including a square top main and high aspect jib that truly brings the old
tornado up to date.
The Tornado Sport class has evolved after a recent ballot in the tornado class voted 60% in
favour of this rig configuration, but the class was unable to implement the new rig due to a 2/3
majority required for rule changes. The new class is made up of top tornado sailors and if
successful in gaining Olympic status will work closely with sailors wishing to convert their
boats to Tornado Sports.
The Tornado Sport proved very exciting in the tough conditions on Lake Garda Winds gusted
over 25kts however the boat was well balanced and easily controllable. The boat also allows
the crew to ride the trapeze downwind with its asymmetric spinnaker . The submission for
Olympic status has been presented by the French Sailing Federation.
