Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club's Tipsy Icicle Week 7

by Paul Allen on 2 Mar 2011
Tipsy Icicle Series Paul Allen
The premier winter series in the North West continued at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 27 February 2011 with week 7 of the Tipsy Icicle Series. The series has now attracted in excess of 130 boats in the 3 three fleets of Asymmetric, Laser and Handicap.

Sunday’s forecast was brilliant with a NW wind forecast and temperatures well above freezing. The actual combination of the wind direction and the temperature made for a fantastic day for the two races. 13 asymmetrics made it out on the day and close racing was seen all day between the RS400s of Hamish Gledhill (with Simon Dowse) and Dave Exley (with Nigel Hall) and the RS200 of Matt Mee (with Emma Norris) with Gledhill scoring a second and a third, Exley scoring a first and a second and Mee scoring a third and first. Eight Lasers were out for the day and the podium this week was again dominated by Greg Marshall, Dave Shiel and Paul Heath. Heath came in with a second and a third, Shiel scored a first and a second and Marshall scored a third and a first. The ambitious Laser fleet showed the PRO some respect this week and the black flag was not required. The 16 strong Handicap fleet was dominated by Paul Allen (RS300 first and second), Steve White (Solo third and first) and Andy Flitcroft (RS300 second and third) in some very close racing with only seconds separating the Solo and RSs on corrected time and only metres separating the 300s.

There’s only one week to go in all three fleets and all to sail for in all three fleets. Well done to the PRO and his teams for a very successful day out on the Flash. Full results are shown on the club website. The weekend after the Tipsy Icicle Series finishes is the RS Winter Championships at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club where RS400s, 300s and 100s will all be out for a two day regatta. The Club would like to extend its invite to all who can make the event over the weekend of 12th and 13th March 2011.
