Melbourne's waterways are alive with activity for a few days, as Variety Splash, raising money for special-needs kids, takes to the water again.

Over 150 guests including boat owners, corporate teams, Variety Ambassadors, Variety supporters and celebrities warmly welcomed the start of Variety Splash 2011 Friday night at an Official Welcome dinner.

Participating boats had docked earlier in the day at Waterfront City Marina, Docklands before Variety Splash participants made their way across to Maia, Docklands.

Guests included notable yachties, Ludde Ingvall (YuuZoo), Nicholas Bartels (Terra Firma), Phil Coombs (51st Project), Mark Turnbull (Sydney Olympic Gold medallist), as well Variety Splash Ambassadors, 3AW radio presenter Mike Brady, Hawthorn Football Club Player Brad Sewell and Actor Blair Mc Donough.

Friday morning the 16 participating boats and their crews depart Docklands for a day of sailing and cruising to Queenscliff. Challenges, activities and plenty of onboard fun will keep crews well occupied before a night of festivities at 360Q Restaurant at Queenscliff Harbour.

Variety Splash continues on Saturday to Mornington Yacht Club before finishing on Sunday at Sandringham Yacht Club.

About Variety Splash:

The Variety Splash is similar in style to the infamous Variety Bash, where the focus is firmly placed on having fun. As with all Variety events, the Splash has a serious side. Its primary objective is to raise money for children in the community with a wide range of special needs.

It is hoped that the 2011 event will raise approximately $150,000 for Children with Special Needs. Included in the 300 participants are sailors, power boaties, corporate and private teams, all dedicated to empowering children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live laugh and learn.
