Walcon marine completes Crown Marina, South Australia

Walcon Marine Australia Pty Ltd has completed construction of the Crown Marina in South Australia. The location at North Haven, just west of Glenelg in South Australia, provides a protected mooring for clients on the sometimes wind-driven south coast.

The construction of Stage One was managed through Walcon Marine’s Western Australian operation, based in Mandurah. Peter Stanley, General Manager – West, is extremely pleased with the smooth installation program. 'The installation comprises the proven Walcon System 2000 product, which was selected by the developer after careful analysis of the current systems available throughout Australia.

This system is one of the most popular designs for clients wanting the shortest possible installation phase', he said. 'The piling works were extensive, and extra time was taken to ensure the most symmetrical layout possible so, when the time came for the pontoons and the entrance walkway to be put into position, our client was absolutely delighted to see the major installation works completed within a matter of a few weeks.

Walcon Marine Australia’s Senior Marina Consultant, Ian McAndrew, also praised the approach of the developer and his team, 'We always enjoy working with developers such as the award winning Sam Sgherza Group. Both our companies share the view that such a well planned and designed marina demands the installation of a high quality pontoon system such as the Walcon model'.

The floating pontoon decks are covered with the visually stimulating, yellow balau hardwood, one of the features that drew the attention of the developer. The top-loading service ducts and silent pontoon connectors were also regarded as highly desirable, and will allow future reconfigurations without major cost or modification, should this be necessary.

One other option available to the developer was the choice of colour for the literally maintenance free rota-moulded polyethylene floats. The waters in North Haven are naturally dark and so the colour selected for the floats was satin black. The result is stunning, with the impression that at times the hardwood decks, set in the silver alloy frames, appear to hover above the surface of the water.

Michael Macolina will manage the marina for the Group and is extremely impressed with the Walcon design and manufacturing standards.

He said, 'We have compared a number of overseas and Australian designs in the very extensive selection process and the main difference between the others and the Walcon product is the obvious Walcon build quality, and the design features of the System 2000. We intend to provide the highest standard of marina facility in South Australia and the Walcon product, along with our operational regimes, will ensure Crown Marina sets the highest possible standards for our clients.'

The marina will provide 103 berths with a range of sizes from twelve to thirty four metres and is now open for business.
