Waka Racing report from the Asian Match Race Championships and Monsoon Cup Qualifier Day 1 :

Today was our first day back racing in Malaysia in nearly a year. We are competing in Kuala Terengganu, defending our Asian Match Racetitle that doubles as the Monsoon Cup Qualifer.

Unlike last year the conditions were a steady breeze in sunny blue skies but by the end of the day an all too familiar black cloud rolled in, which resulted in a good downfall to end the day.

The day was pretty action packed for us today with mulitple penalties going for and against us, as well as some tight finishes. We ended the day with 3 wins and 1 loss, which is a pretty solid start.

Close races today were against Nicolas (Perth) and Sakamoto (Japan). In both races we ended up with double penalties against us but worked hard to pull back the race and just scrape through with victories.

Our only loss today came against young David Gilmour where after being in a controling postion in the start, a gear failure relating to the jib put us off our game.

We recovered well to fix the problem and put a penalty on him but in the process pinning ourselves against the committee boat allowing him to comfortably win the start. From here we fought hard to close the gap and did so intially but with the left becoming very favoured Dave did a nice job of protecting it and offloading his turn to win the race.

So overall an ok start to the event but improvement needed. The mood on the boat feels good with our new Aussie import on bow Morgan White picking up on the kiwi moves and slang pretty quick.

We are looking forward to racing tomorrow. Also check out a quick run down on our day from Phil on our website. www.wakaracing.com

Over and out,

Waka Racing.

Waka Racing would like to thank our main sponsor Tax Management NZ and all the support we receive from the RNZYS, Frontend, Zhik , Wells and Co, PredictWind and Devine Consultants.
