The last time he represented the country was five years ago. Now, Tan Wearn Haw looks set for a return after his team topped the selection trials for this year's Asian Games keelboat match racing event.
The Singapore keelboat team are the defending champions after winning gold at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. Yesterday, the 32-year-old led Team A to a convincing 4-1 win over Team D, led by national sailor Russell Kan, in the best-of-seven final at the SAF Yacht Club.
Tan and the rest of his crew - jib trimmer Yurii Siegel, main trimmer Colin Ng and bowman Benjamin Tan (picture) - should be nominated by SingaporeSailing for the Asian Games, which will be held in Guangzhou, China, from Nov 12 to 27. 'I've never actually felt that I left sailing,' Tan told MediaCorp yesterday. 'I've always kept in touch and chipped in whatever way I could. 'It's great to be back in the major Games fold. There's still nothing like competing for your country.'
Tan credited his crew for the success. 'As a professional, it was all about teamwork, so the better your guys are, the easier it is for the helm to drive the boat and make the decisions,' he said. 'I'm very lucky to have a great crew who make my job so much easier.'
