CORK OCR (Olympic Classes Regatta) 2010 – Kingston, Ontario Canada. Aug 25, 2010.

Close competition in the medal races for 49er and 29erXX classes decided the top finishes.

In the 29erXX class, Tyler Macdonald and Tucker Atterbury won the medal race ahead of Emily Tsang and Lauren Laventure. It was not enough to beat the top three boats as Paris and Hans Henken took home the North American title overall. Winner of last week’s 29er North American Championship, Maxwell Fraser and David Liebenberg finished second in the championship, closely followed by Jen Glass and Mallory Fontenot. The event was sponsored by SEIKO and the winners each received a watch along with their gold medal.

In the SEIKO 49er Canadian Championship, Jon Ladha and Daniel Inkpen won the medal race and overall championship ahead of Gordon Cook and Paul Ehvert who finished third in the medal race. Billy Gooderham and Ian Hogan finished third in the championship. Two young sailors, Dave Mori and Justin Barnes sailed an excellent medal race, finishing second.

This was the first time medal races have been part of a regatta in Canada. Despite light winds, it was exciting for competitors and spectators and the live commentary added excitement and fun to the afternoon.

The Laser and Radial classes completed their regatta series in a day marked by light air on all race areas.

In the Laser class, Evert McLaughlin of Toronto held on to his lead to win the event with Canadian National Team Member Greg Clunies in second.

In the Radial Female fleet, Claire Merry of Toronto finished first, ahead of Danielle Dube of Halifax and Ingrid Merry in third.

In the open Radial fleet (male and female combined), EJ O’Mara and Matthew Morris climbed ahead of Claire Merry after five days of competition.
