Lafayette of Scotland Winner of the 8 Metre Class NA Championship

Etobicoke, Ontario, August 17, 2010 – The North American Eight Metre Association (NAEMA) is pleased to announce that Alan Manuel, Skipper of Lafayette has won the Sodus Bay Cup of the 2010 Eight Metre Class North American Championship. This cup is awarded to the yacht with the best overall score in the regatta. Lafayette from Scotland is only the second yacht, not from North America, to win the North American Championship.
The Harry Kimber Globe & Mail Trophy was awarded to Bryan Gooderham, Skipper of Raven. This trophy was awarded to the yacht designed prior to 1960 with the best score (Classic Fleet). Raven was good enough to also place third in the Modern Fleet.
Prizes were also awarded to Ralph Reimann, Skipper of Sarissa (2nd place, Modern Fleet); John Dakin, Skipper of Venture II (2nd place, Classic Fleet) and Terry McLaughlin, Skipper of Bangalore (3rd place, Classic Fleet).
The North American Eight Metre Association’s North American Championship took place from August 14 – 15, 2 010 and was hosted and organized by the Etobicoke Yacht Club (EYC) in Etobicoke, Ontario. Five races took place on Lake Ontario. Participants in the regatta were from Canada (nine yachts), US (two yachts) and Scotland (one yacht).
The event leads up to the International Eight Metre Association’s World Championships being held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto form August 22 – August 27.
Wind conditions for the North American Championship regatta were building throughout the first day (7-8 knots in the first race; 9-11 knots in the second race and 13 – 15 knots in the third race). On the second day of racing the winds were 7-8 knots for both races.
