SW
2010 Cadet Nationals sponsored by Zhik. Hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, the event runs from 14th – 20th August 2010. Reports from days 1 to 5.

Day 5

With one race to go, the result of this year’s Cadet Class Nationals is still in the balance. Andrew Smith and Rory Burdock (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9243 Blue String Pudding, who have led the event since Race 3, now stand on 28 points, 11 ahead of both Ben Binmore and Martha Jones (Royal Torbay) in 8440 Black Otter and Abigail Croft and Alex Page (Frensham Pond) in 8363 On The Edge. A further discard kicks in with the tenth and final race and Andrew and Rory, Ben and Martha and Henry Mills and Robert Keen (Waldringfield) in 8845 Hot Rocks are all in contention.

Thursday saw a further two races sailed in conditions similar to the previous day. In the combined Gold and Silver fleet, Henry and Robert took the gun in Race 8 from Caroline Croft and Jacob Payne (Frensham Pond) in 7274 Wave Rider, with Ben and Martha third. Jack Wilson and Jim Brooker (Frensham Pond) in 735 Pintail achieved their best result of the event so far taking fourth place, with Andrew and Rory fifth and Amir and Aliya Jannaty (South Cerney) in 9319 sixth, also producing their best performance of the week.

Caroline and Jacob led the Gold and Silver fleet home in Race 9, with second place taken by Mary Henderson and Annie Sibthorp (Salcombe/Itchenor) in 8561 Bad Influence, for their best finish of the event. Abigail and Alex took third, with Henry and Robert fourth, Louise Latham and Aaron Chadwick (Fishers Green) in 9635 Shine On, fifth and Max and Francesca Ingall (Fishers Green) in 8855 Flirting With Danger, sixth.

Sam Yale and Lottie Passmore (Waldringfield) sailing 9369 and Sam Cooper and Alex Laidlaw (Frensham Pond) in 9151 are winners and runners-up respectively of the Bronze Fleet. Sam and Lottie scored 1, 4 today and Sam and Alex, 3, 5 in today’s two races. Mollie Speirs and Louis Mellor (Frensham Pond) in 9294 were third in Race 8. Katie Wetherall and William Hurd-Wood (Parkstone) in 9601 were second in Race 9 and Ross and Johnny Thompson (Frensham Pond) in 9046, third.

Day 4

Wednesday produced the toughest conditions so far this week with bands of rain and a strong, biting wind, which made the final stages of the day’s only scheduled race particularly challenging.

Abigail Croft and Alex Page (Frensham Pond) in 8363 On The Edge led the Gold and Silver fleets from the start and made the most of the wind to take victory by a substantial margin. Henry Mills and Robert Keen (Waldringfield) in 8845 Hot Rocks were second throughout, again with a large gap over the following fleet, until a capsize just short of the line and subsequent gear failure saw Andrew Smith and Rory Burdock (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9243 Blue String Pudding take the runners-up position. Third were Matthew and Ben Shorrock (Frensham Pond) in 8352 Master Mariner, followed by Matthew Currell and Theo Smith (Parkstone) in 8997 Executrix, Loni Lilienthal and Ben Barr (Corinthian Otters) in 8381 Satisfaction and Ben Binmore and Martha Jones (Royal Torbay) in 8440 Black Otter.

With three races to go, Andrew and Rory retain their lead in the Championship with 16 points, 11 ahead of Ben and Martha, who in turn have a margin of one point over Abigail and Alex.

Sam Cooper and Alex Laidlaw (Frensham Pond) in 9151 recorded their second bullet of the week in the Bronze Fleet. Second were Ross and Johnny Thompson (Frensham Pond) in 9046 and third were Katherine Selfe and Matthew Jayasekara (Stone) in 7280.

Sam Yale and Lottie Passmore maintain their overall lead of the Bronze Fleet with nine points. Sam and Alex are second with 16 and Alex Philpott and Megan Ferguson (Frensham Pond) in 9390 third with 26 points.

Day 3

A further two races were completed on Tuesday, with the first discard kicking in.

Race 5 was delayed to allow the wind to fill in. Andrew Smith and Rory Burdock (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9243 Blue String Pudding led the combined Gold and Silver Fleets at the end of the triangle from Jamie Proffitt and Leyla Manthorpe Rizatepe (Fishers Green) in 8846 No Fear and Ben Binmore and Martha Jones (Royal Torbay) in 8440 Black Otter. Sam and Joe Barr (Corinthian Otters) in 9027 Whatever were fourth, Jack Wilson and Jim Brooker (Frensham Pond) in 735 Pintail, fifth and Henry Mills and Robert Keen (Waldringfield) in 8845 Hot Rocks, sixth. These six boats broke away from the rest of the fleet and as the wind dropped, the Race Officer shortened the course, finishing Gold and Silver at the second leeward mark. Andrew and Rory recorded their second bullet of the event. Ben and Martha took second, with Henry and Robert third.

Race 6 was away at the second attempt. Ben and Martha rounded the windward first from Abigail Croft and Alex Page (Frensham Pond) in 8363 On The Edge, with George and Ben Warrington (Thorpe Bay) in 9029 Freestyle, third, Jamie and Leyla, fourth, Nick Sutton and Thomas Jayasekera (Corinthian Otters) in 8844, fifth and David Galazin and Lizzie Wall (South Cerney) in 8348 Liquorice, sixth. Ben and Martha and Abigail and Alex opened up a significant gap over the rest of the Gold and Silver fleets with Ben and Martha scoring their second victory of the event. Nick and Thomas were third.

After six races, Andrew and Rory lead with 14 points. Ben and Martha are 7 points behind with Henry and Robert trailing by a further point on 22.

In the Bronze Fleet, overnight leaders Sam Yale and Lottie Passmore (Waldringfield) sailing 9369 scored 1,2 and after six races hold first place with 6 points. Sam Cooper and Alex Laidlaw (Frensham Pond) in 9151 scored 2,1 yesterday and now fill second place with 15 points. Alex Philpott and Megan Ferguson (Frensham Pond) in 9390 were third in both races and lie third overall with 19 points.

Day 2

Teams awoke to glorious conditions and expectations of a consistent F3/4 NNW. These lasted for the first race of the day, but by the second race, fickle, shifty winds were circling Torbay.

Henry Mills and Robert Keen (Waldringfield) sailing 8845 Hot Rocks were first at the windward from Andrew Smith and Rory Burdock (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9243 Blue String Pudding. Third around was Oliver and William Palierakis (Fishers Green) in 7495, fourth was Jack Hardie and Olivia Bates (Frensham Pond) in 9302, fifth was Edward Cummings and Hattie Sexton (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9028 She Who Dares and sixth was Jamie Proffitt and Leyla Manthorpe Rizatepe (Fishers Green) in 8846 No Fear. The top three places went unchallenged until the final run, when Will Davis and Jack Collings (Royal Lymington) in 9034 came through to take third place.

Louise Latham and Aaron Chadwick (Fishers Green) in 9635 Shine On and Caroline Croft and Jacob Payne (Frensham Pond) in 7274 Wave Rider traded the lead throughout Race 4, with the latter taking the gun in a close finish. Jamie Proffitt and Leyla Manthorpe Rizatepe (Fishers Green) in 8846 No Fear again started well to lie third at the windward, with Andrew and Rory fourth, Michael Horne and Ben Crane (Frensham Pond) in 9013 Purple Ronnie, fifth and Abigail Croft and Alex Page (Frensham Pond) in 8363 On The Edge, sixth. The experience of Andrew and Rory showed in securing third place, with Henry and Robert fourth and Abigail and Alex fifth.

Sam Yale and Lottie Passmore (Waldringfield) sailing 9369 consolidated their position at the head of the Bronze Fleet with bullets in both Races 3 and 4. Second place in Race 3 went to Sam Cooper and Alex Laidlaw (Frensham Pond) in 9151, with Molly Speirs and Louis Mellor (Frensham Pond) in 9294 Breezer, third. Charlie Anderson and Oli King (Frensham Pond) in 9634 took second place in Race 4 from Ross and Johnny Thompson (Frensham Pond) in 9046 in third.

Day 1

82 teams have entered this year’s Cadet National and Open Championship. Hosted by Royal Torbay Yacht Club, the event runs from 14th – 20th August 2010. 10 races are scheduled with discards kicking in with the fifth and tenth races. Teams are divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleets, with Gold and Silver sailing together with Bronze starting five minutes later.

The first two races were sailed today, using a triangular course followed by two windward-leeward loops for Gold and Silver. Andrew Smith and Rory Burdock (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9243 Blue String Pudding led at the windward mark from Ben Binmore and Martha Jones (Royal Torbay) in 8440 Black Otter, Louise Latham and Aaron Chadwick (Fishers Green) in 9635 Shine On, Max and Francesca Ingall (Fishers Green) in 8855 Flirting With Danger, Henry Mills and Robert Keen (Waldringfield) in 8845 Hot Rocks and Edward Cummings and Hattie Sexton (Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond) in 9028 She Who Dares. Andrew and Rory extended their lead to take the gun from Ben and Martha. Max and Francesca took third, from Caroline Croft and Jacob Payne (Frensham Pond) in 7274 Wave Rider, who had been down in tenth place at the gybe. Fifth place went to Louise and Aaron, with sixth to Abigail Croft and Alex Page (Frensham Pond) in 8363 On The Edge, who had also made good progress on their gybe position.

The second race was dominated by Ben and Martha from the host club. Starting from the Committee Boat end of the line, they led from the start and won by a healthy margin. Max and Francesca were second, having held this position since the gybe mark. Third was taken by Caroline and Jacob with Louise and Aaron fourth, Oliver and William Palierakis (Fishers Green) in 7495, fifth and Abigail and Alex sixth.

The Bronze Fleet sailed the same course, but with one less loop. Charlie Anderson and Oli King (Frensham Pond) in 9634 took the gun in Race 1 from Alex Philpott and Megan Ferguson (Frensham Pond) in 9390 and Sam Yale and Lottie Passmore (Waldringfield) in 9369. Race 2 saw victory go to Sam and Lottie, with Katie Weatherall and William Hurd-Wood (Parkstone) in 9601, second and Katherine Selfe and Matthew Jayasekara (Stone) in 7280, third.
