Copa del Rey - Matador resists Bribon's attack

by Regata Copa del Rey on 6 Aug 2010
Realstone Matador - Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre 2009 Nico Martinez http://www.nicomartinez.com
Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre has just two days to go for the 29 edition, and nothing has been decided yet. One more day the wind caused the delay in the start of the races, but once settled it allowed to run two legs which brought the excitement back to the Bay of Palma.

Nothing has been decided yet, and the short distances in the top positions leaves the end open. Guillermo Parada's Matador holds to the leadership in IRC B in spite of Bribón's attack, which scratches one point and adds more excitement to the last two days of racing. Alegre was also able to keep the leadership in IRC A in spite of the good day both her contenders Ran and Container had. Among the RI, Rats on fire benefited from Itaca's poor performance today, which places the former in the first place, and Tanit Medilevel clears out from Pedro Campos' Movistar. Discards were applied in the one-design classes, and X on the beach is new leader in X-35, whereas Iberostar keeps a confortable lead in X-41.

In spite of today's poor performance, Alegre of Andy Soriano remains first in IRC B, with a lead of four points over RAN and Container, tied on 17 points, which get dangerously close. Zennstrom's 72 footer managed a third and a fourth place, whereas Mini Maxi Container steered by Markus Wieser was the best scoring boat in the first one, and the second in the last race, cutting the distance to Soriano by six points. Tactics played an important role today as the wind remained puffy and shifty all day in the Alpha race course, and Alegre didn't call the best tactics among the biggest boats of the fleet.

Matador is still leader in IRC B, but she no longer enjoys the advantage of the previous days, for Bribón cut distances by one point. The boat skippered by Gonzalo Araújo was able to control the regatta from beginning to end thanks to the good tactics called by Ian Walker and Jordi Calafat. They went to the right hand side on the first beat, and to the left on the run that followed, which allowed them to cross the finish line three minutes and a half ahead of second classified Cristabella. As far as CAM is concerned, the 52 footer steered by the Prince of Asturias managed to pass Alberto Roemmers' Matador, but had some trouble with her spi after rounding the first bottom mark and finished seventh. She made up for it on the second race with a second position that places her five points away from the podium, where Cristabella is third. Cusi's Bribón could only manage third in the second race and is still three points behind Matador with just two days to go.

Regarding RI 1, Rats on fire is now first after Manuel Gallego's Itaca IX finished 20th in the first race due to a bad start and problems when hoisting her spi. 'The start was called and we were changing our genoa, after that we ended in a whole in the first beat, and then we had some trouble hoisting the spi, which we had to put down again, which was the icing on the cake', said Itaca's boat-owner Manuel Gallego. She managed to make up for it in the second race though, and looks to tomorrow's discard to get rid of the 20th place and move up to the top of the board again. The First 47.7 is now fourth, behind Portuguese Luso Rux, which won today's first race, and Alex Rumbo a ti, second in the overall classification after 7 races.

In RI 2, Tanit Medilevel of Maria Jose Vila managed her third bullet benefiting from Movistar's blunder in the first race, which was sixth, and increases her advantage in the overall scorings. Pedro Campos managed to win the second race by just 17 seconds of advantage upon the Alicantinian boat steered by Nacho Campos. Tanit Medilevel is now four and a half points ahead of Movistar, although with the discard after the eighth race Movistar will cut advantage by three points.

It was a good day for Red Eléctrica in the X-35 class on the waters of the bay of Palma. A first and a third place boost her up to the top positions of the overall scorings. Nevertheless the application of the discard after eight races benefits her main rivals and leaves the local team in the fourth place, five points behind X on the beach. Italian Legalize is second and Finish X.O. Is third. Last but not least, Iberostar holds a confortable lead in X-41, after finishing first and fourth, three points clear of Isa to of Pablo Braquehais. Third is Tarhun I of Manuel de Tomas, three points behind.

The committee hopes to run two more races tomorrow, which would allow the application of a discard in the compensated time divisions, which could lead to an unexpected swing in positions.
