Lillydale Lake was a fishing ‘hotspot’ on an otherwise cold weekend, at the Go Fishing in Victoria Family Fishing Day, which attracted over 200 local participants.
The Family Fishing Days, organised by Fisheries Victoria as part of the Go Fishing in Victoria initiative, encourages and educates the community in the hobby of recreational fishing.
Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Anthony Hurst said the Lillydale event provided free expert tuition and provided advice to anglers of all levels. 'Activities included learning how to tie knots and rigs, casting practice and putting it all together
with fishing for stocked rainbow trout,' Mr Hurst said.
'Fishing is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy and these events provide the opportunity for everyone to try their hand at catching a fish. Expert instruction was provided by Yarra Valley Flyfishers and Fishcare volunteers.'
More than 800 rainbow trout were stocked into Lillydale Lake prior to the event as part of Fisheries Victoria annual stocking program. Mr Hurst said these fish will provide great fishing opportunities for families over the coming months, with the current school holidays being an ideal time to plan a trip.
'More than 50 fish were caught on the day with many children experiencing the joy of catching their first ever fish.'
Lillydale Lake is one of five Premier lakes being developed as part of the Government’s $3.2 million Go Fishing in Victoria initiative which aims to increase participation in fishing, particularly amongst families.
