Warnemuender Woche latest news.

Conveniently the wind freshened up at the start of the long-distance regatta 'Rund Bornholm' at noon on Monday and spurred on the 46 participants on their course heading towards the Danish vacation island.

The Olympic boat class 470's, the 420's as well as the H-Boot and BIC Techno finished their appearance at this year’s Warnemuender Woche. The Laser Europa Cup remains exciting until its last day: Malte Kamrath from Germany and Michael Hansen from Denmark are equal on points and leading the field. A decision will be reached tomorrow.

'The wind freshens up and we’re awaiting the first yachts to be back in Warnemuende on Wednesday morning – the smaller boats will come in during the day or Wednesday evening at the latest', Uwe Wenzel, Head of the racing committee, explained after the start of the long-distance regatta 'Rund Bornholm' at noon on Monday. So apparently Rasmus, the God of wind; is a fan of the German National Soccer Team, too. In total, 46 yachts are starting in the 270 sea mile regatta in the categories ORC I, II and III. First boat crossing the line is the biggest one, the Volvo Ocean Racer 'Glashäger' with a length of 19,50 metres. The 'Hawesta', a Pogo with a length of just 6,50 metres, is one of the smallest boats in the competition. It is helmed by single-hand sailor Hanjo Thamm. 'The start went smoothly, the boats had to tack out the Neuer Strom against the wind', Wenzel summarized. The exact positions of some of the yachts can be followed via a tracking system on the internet by interested offshore fans (www.tripcom.de).

While the participants of the 'Rund Bornholm' were listening to their starting signal, the Laser sailors were busy preparing the fine tuning for their Olympic sports eqiuipment. It keeps on being very exciting in the Europa Cup: the German top sailor Malte Kamrath is head to head with his Danish opponent Michael Hansen. After the fifth race, Kamrath is in first place, equal in points, in front of Hansen. Head of the racing committee, Egbert Swensson, and his team were all very busy, too: 208 Laser radial and 4.7 wanted to start! But none of the races could start on the third day of the Laser Europa Cup due to a calm and a lot of wind shifts. In the female ranking of the Olympic Laser radial class Dana Gur from Israel is leading the field just ahead of her compatriot Oren Jacob.

The duos of the Olympic boat class 470er had their last opportunity today to prove their abilities. The best German team, Thomas Dehler and Johannes Krohn from Warnemuende, got the third place and had to admit defeat to Piotr Ogrodnik and Pawel Choroba from Poland in first place and the Russian female duo Viktoriya Shuvalova and Lilia Zakhryamina in second place. 'After we were still in the run for gold yesterday, we had some bad luck today! There was just not enough wind for us and the current was too strong', 19-year old helmsman Thomas Dehler explained. The award ceremony of the winners of the youth boat class 420er took place at the same time. In a field of 49 participants, the Danes Tobiasen Balder and Magnus Jung got to the top of the ranking list. Equal in points in second place are the Germans Matti Cipra and Nils Thore Heilmann from Wismar. A team from the other corner of the earth got to the third place: Tim Rossiter and Casey Skinner from Australia. They got a special applause for travelling such a long distance. And the youth officer of the Warnemuender Segel Club (WSC), Christian Kalbitz, proudly presented the club pennant of the WSC to the three junior teams of the South of Perth Yacht Club. 'I’m happy that our 'Knurrhahn' is now carried out into world', the 22-year old law student explained.

The last starting signal for the classes H-Boot and Streamline also rang out today. The WARNEMUENDER WOCHE winners of the H-boot class are helmsman Holger Kretzschmar, Stephan Schaefer and Ingo Borkowski from Berlin. Philipp Kadelbach and his team from Berlin won the German Open of the Streamline, due to the cancellation of today’s race.

The fight for the German Championship of the Dyas sailors continues. After four races helmswoman Christin Kellner with Michael Kluegel from Hechendorf are leading the field. In total, nine races are planned until Wednesday, the seventh of July 2010.
