Byte CII European Championship at Fraglia Vela Riva, day three: Three legs were raced today with winds of 15 knots which brings to date nine races completed with one day of competition remaining.
It was a dramatic afternoon for Marco Gallo, who in today’s first race had problems turning the prow and had to pull out of the race (which was later dropped). In the second race when he had a good lead, the sail came away and fell down the mast slowing him down considerably.
Fortunately Gallo was able to finish with a fourth place and even to fix the sail well enough to finish in third place in the last race of the day. Despite the drama of today’s races, Gallo is still at the top of the leaders board with a 16-point lead over Llena Marti of Spain.
In third place, but out of competition regarding the continental league, is Choo Terence of Singapore, who won back the position from co-national Choy (current world champion).
A good day for Batho of Hungary who started with a first followed by a fourth and a fifth giving him fourth place overall and third of the Europeans. Batho is, however, being hotly challenged by Faste of Norway, winner of the last race and only three points behind.
Darting into second place in today’s first leg was Van Aanholt of the Dutch Antilles. Tapper of Finland, with his win in the second race, puts him within reach of a medal.
Marco Benini of Fraglia Vela Riva drops into eighth position after being third of the Europeans yesterday: after a sixth and a ninth he paid dearly for the 15th position in the third race.
With just one day left the first two positions seem to be a foregone conclusion while there is a fight for the bronze medal. Lara Vadlau of Austria continues to dominate the women, with Carlsen of Denmark and Larycheva of the Ukraine following.
Tomorrow the start has been brought forward to 12.00 o’clock with at least two or possibly three races scheduled.
