Five boats have already confirmed their entries in the 2010 Long Beach to Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race, Nov. 5-11, hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club.
Entries received by Aug. 1 get a $200 discount off of the $1,050 entry fee. With an incentive like that, it’s no surprise so many boats have decided to take advantage of the early entry discount. Both the Notice of Race and the Entry Form are available online at www.lbyc.org .
Peter Tong’s Santa Cruz 70, OEX, will return to defend its record-breaking run of 2 days 22 hours 50 minutes 9 seconds set in the 2008 race. Bob Lane will be bringing his Andrews 63, Medicine Man, back after racing to first in PHRF and ORR honors in Division I in this biennial event.
Returning again will be LBYC member Doug Baker, who was first to finish in the 2007 Cabo race onboard his Andrews 80, Magnitude 80. In the 2008 race early on the second day they lost their mast. Good news was that no one was injured and, after having cut away the entire rig, sails and all, they were able to safely motor to Ensenada.
Baker recently donated Mag 80 to the Orange Coast College of Sailing and Seamanship. So for this year’s Cabo race, he has chartered David Janes and Bill Turpin's Reichel/Pugh 75, Akela, for the event.
'We’re going to have our same [Magnitude 80] crew,' said Baker, 'including [fellow LBYC members] Mike Elias and Mike Van Dyke so I’m sure we’ve got a shot at the record.'
When it comes to ocean racing, Baker is single-minded on his goal.
'I don’t care about handicaps or first in class,' Baker said. 'I race to break [elapsed time] records.'
Also committed to race is Will Durant and Rick Brizendine’s SC52, Relentless, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s J/125, Warrior.
A bonus to this year’s event is the Campbell Cup, a big-boat buoy race scheduled for Oct. 23-24. Named for the legendary sailor Mike Campbell, this annual event draws the same ocean racing sleds that compete in the Cabo race. With only one weekend separating the two races many of the boats will be staying around to race to Cabo. The plan is to offer moorings to boats entered in both events, making it easier to---if necessary---reconfigure boats from buoy racing to ocean racing.
Entered classes will be scored on PHRF and ORR ratings and separated into two divisions. Division I will start on Friday, Nov. 5, and Division II will start on Saturday,
Nov. 6.
