Hobart yachtsman Nick Rogers today sailed to a record-breaking 10th win in the Tasmanian championship for International Dragon yachts and an important step towards winning a second world championship in the three-crew, one-design keelboat class.
Steering Karabos XI, Rogers moved ahead of fellow Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania member Don Calvert's record of nine wins in the classic Dragons, adding this to his nine wins in the prestigious Prince Philip Cup Australasian champion and his world title in 1995.
Karabos IX won all four windward/leeward races today to finish the two-day regatta on 5 points, well clear of Andrew Crisp's Linnea on 10 points and Michael Wilkinson's new boat, Xanthos on 17 points. On Saturday Karabos IX had a first and a second, as did Xanthos.
'The racing today was tight between the fleet, just the sort of preparation we needed for next weekend's pre-Worlds being conducted by the Royal Brighton Yacht Club on Melbourne's Port Phillip, where the 2011 worlds championships will be sailed next January,' Rogers said after the racing.
On a cloudy, the breeze on the River Derwent ranged between 5 and 10 knots, but the Derwent Sailing Squadron managed to complete the final four races for the International Dragons and International J24s. The northerly breeze was shifty, but as dramatic as on Saturday when the wind swung 120 degrees in the first race of the day.
Racing was much closer in the J24 State championships, also conducted over the weekend by the Derwent Sailing Squadron, with Divine Madness, skippered by Craig Squires notching up two wins and two second places following a 2-1 result on Saturday.
Divine Madness finished with a for a net seven points to take the title by one point from Street Car (Peter Bingham) who had a first, two seconds and a third today after a 1-2 score on Saturday.
Third place went to Storm Petrel (Nathan Miles) on 14 points, today winning one race along with a third and two fourth placings, following two thirds on Saturday.
