Sail-World New Zealand- 16 March 2010

by . on 16 Mar 2010

Welcome to Sail-World.Com's New Zealand newsletter for 16 March 2010.

Emirates Team New Zealand have emerged a clear winner from the Qualifying Round of the Louis Vuitton Trophy. Behind them is a logjam on the points table. In this edition we are carrying reports and images from the regatta, along with what happens next in the regatta.

Assuming the Qualifying Round is completed tonight, two teams will drop out of the regatta. Two more will sit out the next phase. Read the full story in the Emirates Team NZ report to catch the detail.

The America's Cup has arrived back in New Zealand, we expect to have some coverage later tonight (NZT).

In the Atlantic, Groupama 3 is closing the gap in the Jules Verne Trophy attempt and at the latest report is currently just 72nm astern of the required mark.

America's Cup news remains the top rating stories in Sail-World. Today we have posted a sequence of video taken at the start, from the Committee Boat end of the line - it is spectacular - much more so than the version screened on TV.

And on the subject of great video, don't miss the Rata Road Regatta story, where one of new Zealand's sailing legends makes a grovelling apology. Yes, it's a tear jerker.

The interviews we have published with Jimmy Spithill, skipper of BMW Oracle Racing, have been another top rating story over the last couple of days, and are now joined with the first part of the interview with Noel 'Nitro' Drennan sail trimmer aboard USA-17. We've updated the interview with more images, including a shot of the wrist PDA, which was vital part of the 'wireless boat' concept used by USA-17 and which was adapted to a number of very cool devices, all new to sailing.

We've also got plenty of local news including the finals of the NZ series for the BMW World Sailing Cup and Olympic hopefuls updating on their forthcoming European campaigns. Catch the great story and photos from Wellington, as a freak storm hits the Corporate Race fleet. For Wellingtonians it was surely just a gentle zephyr, but for those outside the windy city, it would have been Battle Stations!

Don't forget to ensure that your events receives proper coverage by using our online submission facility. You can submit your event/regatta/class/boat news by http://www.sail-world.com/admin/add_story.cfm!Clicking_Here - all copy will be published, please include a photo or three with a side over 1280px wide. There's a new big icon on the home page of www.sail-world.com to make it even easier for you. You will now be automatically informed when your submission has been posted and which regions it has been posted to - a great way to get exposure for your club, class, event, program or campaign.

Many thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!

Double Double
And the rest of the line is not toil and trouble, but quadruple, then another double… On the eve of the 100th Fastnet that has attracted some 464 entries, I heard of one entry in this record fleet that seemed so very apt. Not only because it includes the Commodore of the RORC, but because it combines two Brits and two Aussies.

Some thoughts on provisioning for distance sailing
A new perspective on provisioning and time spent at sea One of the great joys of distance racing unfurls the moment that the dock lines are untied. Suddenly, the myriad packing lists that inevitably define most trip-planning efforts become about as relevant as a tax return from eight years ago.
