A man, aged in his early 40s, was injured while starting his 30ft fibreglass motor cruiser at the fuel wharf at Empire Marina Bobbin Head, Sydney, on Thursday morning. The vessel was not being fuelled at the time.
The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by marina staff and there was no damage to the marina or other vessels.
The NSW Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Police and National Parks arrived quickly on the scene and the man was stabilised and airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
Stephen Smith, the manager of the marina, was one of the first on the scene and helped extinguished the fire.
“A fire on a marina is a risk we train for and the procedures were successfully put to the test today” said Mr Smith. “ The rapid response of the marina staff and the emergency services prevented the fire from escalating and enabled support and first aid to be provided quickly to the injured man, whom we hope will make a full recovery.”
