A 20 to 25 knot breeze blowing across Chesil Beach gave the 18 foot
Skiffs two very fast and exciting races in Portland Harbour this
afternoon (Saturday). An unpromising grey morning gave way to blue skies
and sunshine, providing the sparkling conditions that Skiff sailors love.
Rob Greenhalgh, Dan Johnson and Jonny Meers on 'RMW Marine' did what
they always do when the wind blows - they flew! Starting well in both
races, they simply blasted away from the opposition with nary a wobble,
while everyone else was finding the going tough in the boisterous
conditions.
Without any doubt, the most spectacular dive of the day was
performed by Rob Dulson, Paul Constable and Alec McKinlay on 'Base 1'
(formerly 'Sunday Telegraph') who went base over apex in a perfect
cartwheel when they snagged the mooring rope of the windward mark on the
first lap of Race 1.
The 'White Stuff' team of Victor Brellisford, James Fawcett and Dave
Smith are always good in a breeze, and they took a good second place in
Race 1 ahead of Toby Collyer, Stephen Holmewood and Keith Willis on
'Helly Hansen'.
'White Stuff' seemed set to take second again in Race 2 behind the
flying 'RMW Marine', but a capsize dropped them to fourth place behind
Jon Bennett, Andy Jeffries and Nick Jerkins on 'Computacenter' (formerly
'GoFish') and 'Base 1'.
After two races the 'RMW Marine' boys have their usual score of zero
points, with 'Computanter' and 'White Stuff' both on 11 points.
Positions after two races:
1 'RMW Marine' Rob Greenhalgh, Dan Johnson and Jonny Meers 0 points
2 'Computacenter' Jon Bennett, Andy Jeffries and Nick Jerkins 11 points
3 'White Stuff' Victor Brellisford, James Fawcett and Dave Smith 11
points
4 'Base1' Rob Dulson, Paul Constable and Alec McKinlay 24.7 points
5 'Helly Hansen' Toby Collyer, Stephen Holmewood and Keith Willis 24.7
points
6 'Sports ll' Tim Penfold, Ian Mitchell and Will Penfold 29 points
