F11s Hungry For Action David Price

Hungry for a big gulp of some close-up sailing this weekend? Forget the TV, this is live and it’s right in front of you from the shores of the upper harbour in Sydney.

Close to one hundred F11 crews will compete at the first round of the 2009-2010 NSW Flying Eleven State Championships this weekend on the waters of Moocooboola on Parramatta River, just north of Cockatoo Island.

Hunters Hill Sailing Club, the NSW Flying Eleven Sailing Association and stalwart Race Officer Colin Chidgey will coordinate this momentous spectacle with these young sailors aged between 8-18yrs showcasing Australia’s most successful youth class.

Class boat builder Mark Thorpe has been working overtime this winter to produce yet another twenty Flying Elevens since February, ready just in time for the biggest single youth class event in Australia this season – and it’s only a state titles………

It will most certainly be a busy scene on Saturday with excellent viewing opportunities from the Balmain, Greenwich and Hunters Hill shores. The warning signal for race 1 will be at 1030hrs and the race will run for approximately 70mins, then the fleet will return to shore at HHSC to watch the MHYC’s Seven Islands (Yacht) Race proceed around the Cockatoo, Snapper and Spectacle Islands before sailing back down the harbour.

The second race of the championships on Saturday is scheduled to start mid-afternoon with the F11 fleet also mixing it up with the first heat of the NSW 12ft Skiff Championships hosted by Lane Cove 12ftSSC starting in the Lane Cove River at 1445hrs.

Sunday will see the Flying Eleven’s two hundred odd sailors return to sail another two races, thus completing the four races scheduled for round one. Round two will continue with three more races in the seven race series to be held on the 6th and 7th of February 2010 hosted by Georges River Sailing Club, ultimately determining the outright NSW F11 Champions for 2009-2010.
