The Outsider Youth Girls Scholarship program continues to foster its support of female youth yachting. Since its establishment three years ago, the Outsider Scholarship Program has assisted a number of New Zealand’s up and coming female yachties.
Sail Melbourne 2009
Three sailors are being supported with airfares to compete at the 2009 Sail Melbourne Regatta in December by the Outsider Youth Girls Scholarship program. Emma and Sara Berry will compete in the 470 Class and Molly Meech will compete in the Laser Radial Class. These sailors have earned these scholarships based on past results through the various classes and their future potential. The scholarships for airfares assist in making it affordable to compete overseas as these three sailors continue developing their skills. The experience gained while competing overseas is invaluable. And even though Molly has completed a circumnavigation, this will be her first trip ever aboard a plane!
2010 Trofeo SAR Princess Sophia Regatta
Two sailors are being supported with airfares to Europe to compete in Palma de Majorca at the Trofeo SAR Princess Sophia Regatta in April 2010. Rachel Basevi will be competing in the Laser Radial and board sailor Alice Monk in the RSX. As past recipients of Sail Melbourne scholarships, both sailors continue to impress with their work ethic and hope to gain additional experience and continue improving as a result of competing in Europe for the first time.

Continued Success
The continued success of the scholarship program is due to the foresight of Mick Ashcroft and the generosity of Mrs. Diane Hill and Brian Frecker of Pak’nSave Glen Innes, along with the others from the ( Pak’nSave Packhouse group including Albany, Botany, Manakau and Pukekohe). Scott Tasker at Emirates Airlines has also helped with very cheap airfares and very generous baggage allowances. This combination has helped all these youth sailors represent NZ and develop the skills to become World Champions and potential future Olympic champions. If you as an individual or company are interested in helping facilitate the continued growth of the Outsider Youth Girls Scholarship program, please contact Mick Ashcroft at 09 575 9437 to discuss this program and its goal of assisting New Zealand’s future potential Olympians.
Good luck to all past and current recipients for the new sailing season.
