UNSW puts on a good show at the 2009 University Teams racing regatta

UNSW put on a good show at the 2009 Australian University Teams Racing Regatta.
We fielded a 14 member squad for the Teams Racing Regatta held from October 1 - 4. There were a total of 11 University teams from Sydney, Queensland, Western Australia and Canberra.
The level of competition and experience was high. In the fray there were a mix of Australian / State champions, experienced University sailors and a few first timers. Krystal Weir was the star attraction at this sailing event. She represented Australia in the 2008 Olympic Games and was racing for Sydney University Sailing Club.
Across the three days University sailors got to experience a wide range of wind and weather conditions. This was a challenging venue for both the competitors and race officials, but they still managed to hold 55 qualifying round robins and 25 final fleet races.
UNSW Team 1 qualified for the gold fleet which was an excellent achievement. They showed a lot of guts and maturity among very experienced teams in the competition.
The racing was very close and the whole team gave a 100%. UNSW has a very bright future being one of the youngest teams in the gold fleet.
UNSW team 2 impressed by securing 3rd position in the silver fleet. They sailed very well with two beginners in the team who had only sailed two times earlier, before taking part in this regatta!
The RPAYC and Sydney USYD hosted and delivered a fantastic sailing regatta!
UNSW has already started training for next year’s AUGs which will be held in Perth. UNSW teams sailed together for the first time at this event. For a club which is only five weeks old, we put on a great show and have great promise for the future.
Everyone is welcome to our very first AGM at the Wollahara sailing club. The UNSW Sailing Committee for 2009-2010 will be voted in.
