Kata Beach Resort & Spa – the Regatta's home

Kata Beach Resort & Spa - home of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Duncan Worthington
Kata Beach Resort & Spa is the host venue of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, and has been for over a decade. With it's beach front location on one of Phuket's most scenic bays, Regatta participants and general tourists at large return year-after-year.

The Phuket King's Cup Regatta sits down with Chairman of Kata Group Resorts Thailand, Pamuke Achariyachai, to find out more about the resort, his plans for the coming Regatta and the Group's future.

How many years has Kata Beach Resort & Spa been the host venue of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta?
The Regatta has been with Kata Beach Resort & Spa for 12 years now. The first year was in 1998.

How did you become the host venue of the regatta?
It has always been my personal passion with the sea and I strongly believe that Phuket can be South East Asia's foremost centre for marine leisure playground, and also for Offshore Powerboat racing.

To host the regatta is an honor and I personally believe that Phuket has all the right ingredients for the Regatta to grow. When the opportunity for the new host venue for the Regatta became available I had no hesitation in going for it.

What does the Phuket King's Cup Regatta mean to you?
It means a lot. First and foremost, Kata Group Resorts is proudly supporting one of His Majesty King Bhumibol of Thailand’s worthy causes.

Secondly, being a host sponsor of such a prestigious event can draw in crowds and interest on the global scale, helping promote Phuket as one of the top sailing destinations.

This year, HM the King of Thailand's birthday will be on the closing day of the regatta, what special plans do you have for the closing party?
For a special occasion like this it surely deserves something special. I'm not going to give anything away right now.

Are there any changes/new additions to Kata Beach Resort & Spa this year? If so, what?
We continue to develop and improve our facilities and services every year because guests’ expectations keep on changing, and guests become more and more demanding. But a big addition to our product improvement last year was the Elephant Fountain at the Hotel Entrance. It does not only make the entrance more welcoming but also beautifies and promotes Kata area. Lots of tourists take photos of this venue and show them back home.

This year we will be upgrading our outdoor Atrium terrace area, installing new design floor boards and adding water features. The transformation will be completed very soon.

What facilities does Kata Beach Resort & Spa have?
We have all the necessary facilities a 4 star international resort can offer. But our name comes from our location, being on the beach. We offer sea view deluxe rooms and suites. An elegant and authentic Italian restaurant, ‘Peppinos’ is a good dining option, or go beachside at the “Coco Palm”, with the best view of Kata Bay overlooking “Koh Poo” or Crab Island. The hotel has two swimming pools with Jacuzzis and a swim up bar. For added relaxing, we have the Kanda Spa, which has signature treatments popular with our guests.

You launched a resort in Samui in recent years, how do you see Kata Group developing over the next five years?
Our group has kept on growing and striving to meet market demands in Thailand. We do our best in providing the best facilities and services whenever and wherever a new resort of the Group will be built. Adding the fine touch of Thai Hospitality in all the resorts combined with having a family atmosphere is our key.

We have been looking at Khao Lak for many years and we strongly believe that the time is right to do something there right now.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
