SSAA Tranz Tasman double handed Yacht Race.
At 0020 this morning a phone call from Mike Thurston via satellite phone in 'Drina' advised race control that 'Up the Blue' had retired after losing her rig.
As standard practice for long distance races the SSAA require all participants to participate in a 'midnight mass' where all competitors have a chat and advise of good news or bad.
Bad news was received from 'Up the Blue' that she had lost her rig at approx 2000 last night, and had retired.
They had immediately been offered assistance from other competitors but refused advising they were OK, were resting till this morning when they would erect a jury rig and head back to Sydney.
Their position was reported as 34,07S 156,03E approx 225nm east of Sydney.
