Gear of the Year - Cobra's compact hand-held VHF radio

by BW Media on 25 Sep 2009
Gear of the Year SW
Cobra Marine's amazingly named 'MR HH325 V EU', a compact submersible hand-held radio, has been awarded 'Gear of the Year for 2009' by Practical Sailor, Editor's Choice Product.

Noted for many advanced features, such as a signal-strength meter and battery saver mode, the MR HH325 VP EU was chosen to represent outstanding quality and value. The signal strength meter displays the power of the transmitted or received signal, while the battery saver mode conserves power when the radio is in standby.

Unlike some of the other VHF radios tested, Cobra's MR HH325 VP is submersible to JIS7 standards. With selectable power output of either 1, 3 or 5 watts, the unit also allows both short- and long-term operation.

While it offers a unique, compact design, this device provides unlimited channel memory and instant access to channels 16 for emergency situations.

It features three scan modes: numerical, memory scan and tri-watch. Memory scan enables users to find conversations on previously programmed channels, while tri-watch allows the monitoring of three channels at once, including channel 16 and two user-selected channels.

Practical Sailor was also impressed with the MR HH325 VP EU's large, illuminated LCD display, which is up to 60% bigger than the competition. The handheld's function keys are illuminated for greater visibility. With the push of a button, owners can lock the function keys to eliminate accidental settings changes.

An external speaker/microphone jack enables the connection of Cobra speaker mic accessories for hip or body worn operation. Unlike other handhelds, the MR HH325 VP EU comes with plenty of extra equipment, including a 1,500 mAh NiMH rechargeable battery, locking desktop charger, spring-loaded swiveling belt clip and wrist strap.
