Last weekend’s BMW Autumn Regatta at the RHKYC was notable for the fact that 98 boats turned out for one of the most sweltering sailing weekends on record – but don’t lose sight of the fact that it was, really, only a pre-qualifier for the BMW Sailing Cup!
Class winners at the BMW Autumn Regatta were:
IRC: Jelik (Frank Pong)
HKPN: Sex Drive (Rob Berkley)
Dragon: Fei Chi (Karl Grebstad)
Etchells: Dream On (Mark Thornburrow)
Flying 15: Squiffy (Howard Williams)
Impala: Moll (Phillip Bowring)
Ruffian: Schannuleke (Barry Hayes)
Sportsboats: Wild at Heart (Paul Murphy)
These crews will match race the RHKYC Platus next Sunday 20th September. Two round robins of four crews each, and the winners of each round robin to face off in a best-of-three final. The winning boat’s skipper and crew will be invited to represent BMW Hong Kong at the World Final of the BMW Sailing Cup in 2010, with flight and hotel expenses paid by BMW Hong Kong.
The venue for the Grand Finals of the BMW Sailing Cup has yet to be announced. In 2007 it took place in Valencia (winner: Germany), in 2008 the event was hosted in Dubai (winner: Spain) and last year the “team with the furthest to travel” (New Zealand) took home the trophy from Malcesine, Lake Garda, after four days of top-class competition.
